Would you like to take a maternity nurse training and excel in caring for newborn babies and their parents? Discover the expertise of Isabelle, a
passionate trainer at Pop.Pins Academy, a benchmark in training for childcare professionals in Geneva and the canton of Vaud.
In this exclusive interview, Isabelle shares her expertise and her caring approach to training Maternity Nurses and Nannies to meet the daily challenges of their profession. Much more than just a technical apprenticeship, her training imparts the skills that are essential for establishing a relationship of trust with families and providing serene support for young parents.
In the course of this discussion, she gives invaluable advice on good practice in the profession: compliance with ethical and professional standards, managing multiples (twins, triplets), emotional support for parents, and much more. It’s an enriching interview that will take you right to the heart of the essential role of a qualified Maternity Nurse.
(BeeBoo) Hello Isabelle, why do you think it’s important for a Maternity Nurse to master ethical and professional standards when working?
(Isabelle) Hello! I think that mastering ethical and professional standards is fundamental because the role of the maternity nurse involves being very close to families at a very sensitive time in their lives.
Respecting these standards allows us to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the babies while building a relationship of trust with the parents.
Mastering professional standards means respecting family privacy, respecting parental choice and, of course, communicating clearly and transparently with parents.
These values underpin calm and respectful support.
What advice do you have on how to build a professional and respectful relationship with families, while at the same time remaining empathetic and accessible?
I would say that the first thing is to listen actively and attentively, without judgement, to the parents and to acknowledge their concerns.
Then you have to be clear in your communication: explain your role, your limits and the objectives of your intervention.
Empathy is also essential: put yourself in the families’ shoes while maintaining a professional attitude.
Finally, a positive and reassuring attitude helps to create an environment of trust.

About caring for twins or multiples:
What specific skills are needed to care for twins or multiples and how are they taught in this training?
First and foremost, caring for twins requires rigorous organisation and the ability to prioritise the needs of the newborns in your care. You also need to be highly adaptable and develop the ability to remain calm in different situations and at different times of the day.
If there’s one skill that stands out, it’s effective time management, which is essential if you’re to meet the needs of the babies while managing the expectations of the parents. Of course, there’s also a lot of love and affection to share 😉
What are the biggest challenges maternity nurses face when caring for multiple babies? How do you help them cope?
At the Pop.ins Academy, we train our maternity nurses to establish routines adapted to the needs and rhythms of twins and to work effectively with parents. Transparent and caring communication is essential.
We also place great emphasis on acquiring and developing knowledge about the physical and psychological growth of the newborn. This enables us to give real meaning to the support and care we give to families, while promoting the baby’s flourishing and harmonious development.
Emotional and psychological support:
How do you train maternity nurses to provide emotional support to families facing difficult situations, such as having a premature baby or a baby with special needs?
We have developed a comprehensive, hands-on training programme to prepare maternity nurses to handle these delicate situations with sensitivity and skill.
Part of the training is dedicated to understanding the particularities of premature babies or babies with special needs (disabilities, pathologies, etc.). Our training also includes modules on psychological and emotional support. These courses include case studies, active listening techniques and tools for identifying signs of stress or distress in parents.
Why is it important for maternity nurses to be aware of the emotional challenges parents face, and what tools do you suggest they use to respond effectively?
It is just as important for our maternity nurses to know the techniques of care as it is to understand and support parents in their role.
A calm parent is a parent who is more available to their child. Understanding parents’ emotions helps us to support them more effectively and to build their confidence in their own abilities.
As a coach specialising in parenting and child development, I train nannies in the different emotional states and in non-violent communication. Non-violent communication is a fundamental tool for building bonds of trust and empathy with both children and parents, and I also share resources for dealing with sensitive situations such as post-partum difficulties: these can include post-natal depression, parental exhaustion or difficulties adjusting to parenthood. I teach emotional support techniques such as relaxation strategies and tips for building parental resilience,
The aim is for nannies to be able to provide emotional support with respect for personal and professional boundaries.
